It was great, boring though couldn't swim or dive Baby Goonies hatching and taking 1st flight. Sharks inshore everyday. Our job was to maintain and service any an all Acft. coming in from the states or coming back from Nam 24/7 some with supplies some with troops headed to Nam. Sadly some of the returning flights from Nam coatained many of those dreaded silver coffins, and an occasional tropper headed home.A somber job on such a beautiful Island...

Query: Hello, I was on Midway 18 months 1957 - 1959 Went there in October 1957 as RM1 at the Naval Station "NQM". I was watch supervisor at NQM and we also ran the ARINC station. My wife, daughter and I always enjoyed taking the LCM over to Eastern where we would walk around the Island and beach comb. We beach combed a lot at Sand Island also, still have sever fish balls that we gathered around the island, My daughter was only 2 when we were out there and I would carry her on my shoulders while we beach combed. It is a shame what the "U.S. FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE" has done to the island. Well I guess what has been done can not be undone. I left Midway as and RMl but the following month I was promoted to RMC. We really enjoyed the island I retired from the Navy in 1971 as an RMCS.

Query: Hello.
I had posted a query back in 2002, never received anything back. I was looking at the original post and noticed an old address was listed. Above is a correct address.
I was on Midway in 1958/59 Worked out of the metalsmith shop. Was assigned to the trouble shooting cart, on the flight line with one person from each shop. We were responsible for last minute repairs on the WV-2 (Super Connies). Came to Midway as a third class metalsmith and was promoted to second class on the island.I have a lot of pictures and many old 8 mm moving films that my daughter had converted to a DVD. If anyone answers this ,be sure to put Midway Island on the subject line. Thanks Art

Query: On Decemeber 22, 1969 I gave birth to twins on Midway Island. We have the original birth certificates that were given to me on the day they were born. However, when the children tried to obtain passports they were told they were not acceptable. I have been to our local congressmen, senators, and have contacted the Dept. of Navy in Washington and no one can send me in the correct direction. Their birth certificates were not filed in Hawaii as everyone says nor in the Phillipines. I can remember being told that if i ever lost the birth certificates I would have to contact the Dept. of Navy to obtain that isn't working! Has anyone else had this problem? If so do you an address where I can request their birth certificates so that as a family we can travel outside the US? My ex-husband was Ernest A. Lambert. Thank you so much for any help you can provide.

Benning I had occasion to meet a young lady who worked in a Columbus, GA clothing store. She had been born on Midway Island and based on deduction I would assume her year of birth to be 1953 – 1955. She is evidently not listed in the “Happy birthday” pdf on this website.

I have contacted both Lisa Ellis and Stephanie Mignano – Lisa recalls having contact five years ago with a woman born on Midway in 1955 but does not remember her name. If any of you were on the island in the fifties and recall a family that was blessed with a baby girl in ’55 I would love to hear from you.

Query: Hi,

My father, CPO Joseph Moore, was stationed at Midway from 57-59. I was very young at the time, but it is the first memories I have, what a beautiful place to have those first memories of. We lived in the first row of married housing at the foot of the big hill. I sure these all have names but I do not remember them. Seems like the Zimmermans lived behind us, or beside us.

I had the only large triycle on the base. My father played Santa Claus and my mother taught baton lessons. Swimming in the warm waters and finding fishballs are my best memories. I still have the fishballs and they have become very important to my family.

Midway is always a topic when us kids get together, and was always spoke with joy from my father. I believe that was his favorite tour with the Navy. He always wanted to return, as all of us did.

If you know of anyone else that was stationed there at the same time and that knew my father please email me with the information to contact them.

Thanks
Donna Moore Knight

I was happy to discover the various websites on Midway and will contact and post info in hopes of hearing from others that I might have known on this wonderful island paradise. I have very fond memories and hope that I can return someday. Yes, I remember fishballin(even found a couple), swimming at the beach, little league, taking the boat trip to Eastern and walking around the island, and the free movies!! Wow!! what a great place for a youngster in the early sixties.

Query: I am one of the original "Plank Owners" of Navfac Midway,
stationed there from October 69 through October 69.
Never enjoyed a duty station as much as I did Midway, even though I didn't know it at the time.
Still have many of my Fishball finds, netted in colored
nylon chalk line hanging on the patio of my home in south Florida.

Query: Hi,
My husband was stationed at the NavFac from 68--70. I was the lst official Kdg. teacher, DOD, at George Cannon.

Midway has been closed to the PUBLIC, VETS, etc. as of 3/02, by the Fish and Wildlife Service. They plan to eliminate all things, plants, wildlife "non-native: to Midway. If you'd like to join the efforts to keep Midway open the the public, please write. Midway deserves better than the FWS. Veterans, birdlovers, reverential tourists deserve to see the Navy's Most Beautiful Isle.

Query: I was stationed on Midway Island from November of 1976 until June of 1978. I was an ET2 at the time and worked at the NavFac. It was the very first home for my wife and I. Our son, who now is stationed on the USS Kitty Hawk was born during our time there. After spending a year on Diego Garcia before arriving on Midway, I thought I had died and gone to heaven by comparison. My wife Dotti and I, who recently celebrated our 25th anniversary, still fondly speak of our time on Midway. If they hadn't of pulled the dependents off, we would have extended as long as they would have let us stay!

Query: I was stationed on Midway in 1960-61 as a weatherman. I was with the upper air section, we had a dog that lived with us at the office, We tried to hatch a goony bird egg in an incubator but it didn't work. We even sent out our own Christmas card and that really got us in hot water, several work details. but it was worth it just to show the br ass we were free to do what we wanted. What were the Ja tombstones for in front of the Admin building?

wonderful Seabees and even tho the 12 hr days were long we
truely had fun. After Midway i was a gunner on a river boat
in viet nam and then a gmg3 on board the USS Loftberg
DD759. I had the pleasure to pull into Midway in 1970 and
was amazed at how the base had fallen into disrepair and at
the lack of people on the island. I have many fond memories
of my first duty station. Its great to see the pics. Thank
you..............RO

Query: I was stationed at the Naval Air Facility from October 1978
to October 1979. I arrived a few months after the last of
the dependents departed. I think I was the only Legalman
ever stationed there. Work included the morning routine of
coffee in my office with MM1 Al Coley from Security and
PN1 "Pike" Rucker from the personnel office. Other
personalities included JO2 Janet Rabin, SN Donna Goodrich,
YN1 John Bates, LT Duffy, CAPT Coales, CDR Martin, Pilot
Ben Mason, and many others.
Off-duty activities included a lot of hour on KMTH. RM1
Mike "Steamer" Stanley played pre-Beatles Top 40, counting
down the lists numerous times. I was first introduced to
jazz there by LT Major King, NC, USN who billed himself
as "The Navy's Only Major." He used to smoke his pipe in
the studio and, forgetting it was in his mouth, would bump
it against the mic, thereby making his signature on-air
thump.
I could go on, but I'd better not.
I'm lookin forward to returning in June 2002.
